Sony may have moved on from its 2015 classic Bloodborne but its fans have not — and rightly so, for many it’s one of the best games of the PS4 generation. Thanks to AI upscaling and the power of the PS5 it is possible to play Bloodborne at 4K 60fps. Kind of.
Video game tech analysis site Digital Foundry received footage of Bloodborne running on a PS5 at 4K in 60fps. The footage obtained by Digital Foundry suggests that the game is running on a PS5 development kit or a debug unit due to presence of trophy notifications similar to what the PS5 has. Performance is dubbed as “essentially a flat 60 frames per second”. Running it through an AI upscaler brings it upto 4K. You can check it out for yourself right below.
Now if you play Bloodborne on a PS5 right now you won’t be able to leverage this and will be locked to 1080p at a somewhat inconsistent 30fps. Reason being, retail PS5 units cannot run unofficial patches. In the case of the video above, the user who sent in the footage to Digital Foundry was using a PS5 made for game development which can run all manner of unsigned code. And in this instance, the performance achieved builds upon a past community patch for Bloodborne made for the PS4 Pro by noted hacker Lance McDonald. What this mean is, if you want to play Bloodborne at 4K 60fps on a PS5 you’ll need access to development hardware, which is next to impossible for end users.
However the video gives us a great indication of what is possible if Sony decides to revisit this classic. We’ve already had Demon’s Souls masterfully brought back as a PS5 launch title and it will be interesting to see how a potential Bloodborne remaster or remake could work to take advantage of current generation hardware.
