Buzz: MLC Vani Devi is named chair of the Legislative Council

Hyderabad: A persona non grata for any political party or nation until a few months ago, the daughter of the former prime minister, late PV Narasimha Rao, Surabhi Vani Devi, is now a buzzword.

An academic who did not show interest in carrying on her father’s political legacy earlier was surprisingly only exposed a few months ago when Prime Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao made her a key member of the PV Centenary Celebrations Committee, giving the Telangana Congress a chance to hold on to the legacy of the former prime minister.

She was later named the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate for the vacant seat in the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad constituency legislature, which she won by a majority of 11,703 votes against the BJP N. Ramchander Rao won it.

Now, in the TRS circles, it is believed that Vani Devi will probably become the chair of the legislative council, which will further strengthen her image and improve the party’s stature in public.

At the moment, former MP Guttha Sukhender Reddy is chairing the legislative council, but it is said that he is facing many health problems and wants to step down. Therefore, KCR will possibly replace him with Vani Devi. “A decision is expected after the by-election in Nagarjunasagar,” sources said.

It has also been said that Vani Devi could be offered a cabinet post along with Nizamabad MLC and KCRs, daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha, but that is unlikely, party sources said.
