'Superstore' Series Finale: How the Show Came to an End

Superstore has now come to an end on NBC after six seasons. The comedy signed off with a two-part series finale that tried to give everyone at Cloud 9 a happy ending – and then jumped into the future to see where the characters' lives had taken them after working in the store.

This came after the finale episodes, titled "Perfect Store" and "All Sales Final," revealed that Cloud 9 was closing, with its parent company Zephra turning the store into an online-only company.

However, before that happened the show gave NBC viewers what they most wanted: a happy ending for Amy (America Ferrera) and Jonah (Ben Feldman), with the pair kissing only to get interrupted by a customer asking for a menstrual cup – the same customer that asked for the stool softener in the pilot of the comedy.

Amy and Jonah's kiss, however, almost did not happen. Though Jonah had broken up with Hannah (Maria Thayer) and Amy had confronted her ex, the pair seemed to be in very different places, with Jonah still hurt by the way that Amy left at the start of the season.

"I'm not just something you can schedule for whenever you're free," Jonah told her as the pair convened. "I'm sorry, but I don't know what I want anymore."

However, Amy managed to change his mind with a little romantic speech. "When I first met you, I thought you were the most annoying person I'd ever met," Amy said, "with your moments of beauty, seize-the-day crap — like you'd watched Dead Poets Society too many times.

"I hated how cheesy you were, I hated how woke you were, I hated how often you used the word 'artisan'... But most of all, I hated how you believed that life could be better than it was. And yet, here we are, and my life is so much better than it was because of you. And I screwed it all up. I know that. But you waited six years for me, so if I have to wait another—" At that point, he kissed her.

In that final flash-forward, we learned that the pair had married and had a son called Carter. We also learned that Amy had quit her corporate gig at Zephra.

They were not the only Superstore cast members, however, who got a happy ending in the series finale.

Three of the cast members remain working for Zephra. Dina (Lauren Ash) who is revealed to still be dating Garrett (Colton Dunn), is now the manager of the company's Ozark Highlands fulfillment center, and she had taken on Marcus (Jon Barinholtz) and Justine (Kelly Schumann) to work in the warehouse.

Another group of former Cloud 9 employees also still work together. Glenn (Mark McKinney) reopened the Sturgis & Sons hardware store, and now works with Cheyenne (Nichole Sakura) and Mateo (Nico Santos). This segment also paid tribute to the late Myrtle actress Linda Porter, whose picture is on the wall of the store. In a later picnic scene, we also learned that Mateo and Eric (George Salazar) are also now married.

Asked by TV Line why the show decided on a flash-forward ending, executive producer Gabe Miller said, "We were allowed to have a more realistic and less upbeat ending for the store, but give a sense that things would be OK for these people. To do that all together in the same episode, we needed to play with time a little, which the show has never done. It made it kind of special."

The Superstore finale, however, may not be the last time we see these characters, with a Bo (Johnny Pemberton) and Cheyenne spin-off still in development at NBC.

Superstore seasons 1 to 6 are streaming now on Hulu and Peacock.
