PATNA: A minor girl allegedly committed suicide in Bihar's Munger on Friday over a minor tiff with her younger sister for keeping the possession of family cellphone for whole night.
The incident took place at village Itwa Pachrukhi under Dharhara police station area of Munger.
Sandhya Kumari — who was aged around 16 year — had written her matriculation examination this year, police said.
Sandhya was found hanging inside the store room of the family house by her younger sister Sakshi Kumari.
“Sakshi is hardly aged around 11 years,” deputy superintendent of police (probationer)-cum-Dharhara police station SHO Nawal Kishore said.
Sakshi woke-up at around 4am after which she spotted her elder sister hanging.
“One of their aunts had left for a morning walk by that time while the rest members of the joint family were still asleep. None came to know that when Sandhya clandestinely woke and hanged herself,” he said.
Police, quoting Sandhya’s mother, said that she had been demanding a separate cell phone for herself for some time.
“The mother said that she didn’t purchase a separate one as she didn’t have that much financial capacity to provide separate phones to both daughters and keep one for herself. The entire family used one single non-Android cell phone over which both sisters had a tiff on Thursday night,” he said.
Just before going to sleep, both sisters argued over keeping the possession of the phone for night.
The mother intervened and kept the phone with herself instead of giving it to any one of them and all went to sleep.
The girl’s father works outside the state as a daily wager and the family somehow meets the daily needs.
Sandhya had used one of her scarfs as a noose to hang from a ceiling fan inside the store room.
The village chowkidar was informed about the incident by 6am.
Sandhya’s mother has given a written statement to police that her elder daughter committed suicide just because she didn’t get the cellphone to keep it with herself.
The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem.
An unnatural death case would be registered in connection with the incident, police said.
