Everywhere time there is a need to stand up for the women, Sona Mohapatra is there. The Indian singer, composer and lyricist besides her great beats and quirky numbers, is also known for never mincing her words. And this time, Sona has landed herself plum in the middle of controversy because she chose to stand up against nonsensical misogynistic things that politicians say. Yes, we are talking about the #RippedJeans controversy, which was trending for days.
Allow us to fill you in. A couple of days ago, the Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat, made some sexist remarks about women sporting ripped jeans, and how they were not equipped to give good values to their kids. No one knows why ripped jeans mean that the values slide right out of the rip, but he said it. It got women riled up, rightly so and people from across the country dissed Rawat for his stereotypical and misogynistic mindset. And one such woman to voice her dissent was singer Sona Mohapatra who took to twitter to talk about it.
Posting a picture of Hindu Goddess Maa Kaali, with a caption that read, “Are my knees Sanskaari enough to show to the world? ” Sona was savage in giving it back to everyone who agreed with the likes of CM Tirath Singh Rawat, for whom women showing their knees lacked morals and values. And while we saw where Sona was coming from, taking a dig at all those who worship goddesses, but dismiss us women, her post attracted a lot of backlash from those who refused to open their minds about it.

This post of mine on Instagram has been getting endless, nasty threats. I’ve blocked many & won’t hesitate in taking a couple to jail for bullying, intimidation & all else. These protectors of dharma & our ‘culture’ don’t realise my commitment to do it better than them. 🧚🏿♀️🔴 pic.twitter.com/KFOXrQ8xZu

Sona has been receiving a lot of death threats and nasty jibes for her recent post. A lot of spineless trolls have been trying to intimidate her with their abusive and aggressive comments. Except, Sona wasn’t one to succumb to these trolls, and she refused to take her post down. In fact, she took to twitter, addressing the threats and wrote, “won’t hesitate in taking a couple to jail for bullying, intimidation and all else.”
Five days later, the protectors of ‘dharma’ apparently, continue to threaten, bully & write hate messages like these. 👇🏾I’ve blocked & reported over 100 today. On Twitter, I’m trolled with the words ‘Sanghi’ & on Instagram; ‘Hindu-Phobic’. 🧐. Interesting. pic.twitter.com/W8l7eiRhBh

She went on to also write, “Five days later, the protectors of ‘dharma’ apparently, continue to threaten, bully & write hate messages like these. I’ve blocked & reported over 100 today. On Twitter, I’m trolled with the words ‘Sanghi’ & on Instagram; ‘Hindu-Phobic’. Interesting.” With this, Sona shared screenshots of the kind of hateful messages she’d been refusing, and it was yet another example of how intolerant and easily offended people are in this country.
Meanwhile, Sona has requested Mumbai Police to look into the threats she has received, including ones about her social media accounts getting hacked. Guess that is what happens when you have a voice, the people rise to repress it. Kudos Sona for never backing down.
