India vs England (IND vs ENG) 2nd ODI Live Cricket Score: The Virat Kohli-led rampaging Indian team takes on a rather clueless England team, aiming to seal off another series victory in the second ODI in Pune on Friday. They were asked to bat first by Jos Buttler at the toss, losing both their openers — Shikhar Dhawan (4) and Rohit Sharma (25) — cheaply. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then built a 100+ partnership that set the innings back on track.
England are playing under Jos Buttler’s captaincy as their full-time skipper Eoin Morgan and batsman Sam Billings are not playing the crucial game owing to injuries. If England have to put a big total or chase a score, the trio of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali needs to fire in unison.
2nd ODI, Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, 26 Mar, 2021
Topley is brought back into the attack. And so, after a good 20 overs of spin, there is seam bowling on display once again now. Rahul pulls him for four - one bounce and over. Rashid bowls his last over now. He got the wicket of Kohli (should have had him twice actually) but has been expensive today. And both batsmen try to charge Rashid in his last over. A catch off Pant's bat lands just short of long on. Off the last ball though, Pant manages to smash a six - his first of the day.
IND 194/3 after 38
Rishabh Pant joins KL Rahul. Still England stick with spin. Rahul takes control now, firing a four off Moeen Ali through the covers. Pant has a few overs to see his way in before entering blitz mode - he is content to push the ball around for singles for now. Krunal Pandya is seen stretching his limbs on the sidelines. Moeen Ali bowls out his 10 overs in one go. Finishes with 0/47. Not usual to see spinners bowl all their overs in one go in modern times.
IND 173/3 after 35
The acceleration comes from Rahul too now. Gets to his 50 with a single and follows it up by stepping out to Rashid and smashing a six back over his head. But then the wicket comes for England. Virat Kohli is caught behind against Rashid. He is out for 66. Buttler dropped an earlier catch off his bat, but not this time.
IND 158/3 after 32
The 100th run of the partnership is scored in the 29th over. This pair has done well to set up a great platform for a charge from the power-packed Indian middle order - Pant and the Pandya brothers to come after this.
IND 142/2 after 30
Kohli gets to 50! Off the next ball he faces, he smashes Adil Rashid for a mighty six! Is this the change of gear we were waiting for?
His last six international innings: 73*, 77*, 1, 80*, 56, 50* - TODAY
IND 135/2 after 28
England go through their middle overs quickly with their spin duo. Kohli and Rahul's partnership is not being put under too much pressure though. The partnership, worth 80 now, is flowering. England are waiting for them to commit the mistake. Both batsmen, content to deal in singles for now, will be looking for the opportune moment to shift gears at some point now.
IND 121/2 after 26
Kohli has been dropped! A sharp chance for Buttler but he spills the catch. Frustration for Rashid, the bowler. Relief for India. The 100 comes up in the 23rd over courtesy a misfield, as England operate with spin from either end. Speaking during a discussion on the matter of field positioning to spinners, Sunil Gavaskar casually mentions that the two wickets he got in international cricket were as a leg spinner - with catches going to mid on and extra cover.
IND 103/2 after 23
The first over of spin is seen in the 17th over as Moeen Ali is introduced after a drinks break. Tom Curran continues bowling inexpensively. Some fluency comes in the partnership now, with singles coming off every ball in Moeen's second over. Time for Adil Rashid in the 20th over. Will we have spin from both ends now? KL Rahul drives him for four through the covers.
IND 90/2 after 20
More fortuitous runs for India. Rahul slams his bat down just in time to block out a Stokes yorker and the ball catches the edge and runs away for four. A big over - 10 runs come off the 15th.
IND 72/2 after 16
Kohli and KL look to play themselves in as the field spreads out. KL hooks a short ball from Stokes - for just a single though. Singles the order of the day in the overs following the first Powerplay. 50 comes up for India after 13 overs. Kohli gets away with one! Tries to come down the pitch, gets a big inside edge that flies past Buttler for four behind the keeper.
IND 56/2 after 14
Tom Curran is England's first change, he replaces Topley, bowling from the opposite end of Sam Curran. He is met with a glorious on drive for four from Kohli on the first ball he bowls. Five dots to follow that. Stokes brought into the attack in the 11th. They look to be drawing their length back - looking less for movement in the air and more for purchase off the surface - than the strike duo of S Curran and Topley.
IND 45/2 after 11
'England have burgled a wicket!' Rohit Sharma is OUT! Flicks a full delivery from Sam Curran for a catch to short fine leg. That should have flown to the fence but found the fielder instead. Rohit is out for 25. KL Rahul joins Kohli at 4.
IND 37/2 after 8.4
Curran strays on to Kohli's pads and the skipper glances it down to fine leg for four. First boundary for Kohli. In the next over, Topley again strays on Rohit's pads - again, glanced away for four to fine leg. Finally, some runs start to come for India. Rohit then cuts a short ball from Topley for four. Two balls later, Rohit pulls Topley for four to deep midwickt. A big over for India - 12 from it.
IND 36/1 after 8
Curran tries to do what Topley is doing, pitches the ball up and tries to get swing. Rohit, however, picks the delivery on the volley and drives for four down the ground. The first boundary of the day and a beautiful one from Rohit. Topley continues to create troubles at the other end - there are huge LBW appeals against Rohit. Raps Rohit on the pads once again.
IND 18/1 after 6
Dhawan is tempted into going for an expansive off drive and gets an edge to go to slips. Topley executes the plan to perfection. England make their first inroad. Dhawan is out for 4.
IND 9/1 after 3.5
Dhawan, with two slips in place for him, gets off the mark with a push through the gap which goes for three runs towards the boundary. 4 runs come from the first over of the match. Topley, playing in the 2nd ODI in place of Wood, bowls the 2nd over, extricating a lot of movement in the air.
IND 6/0 after 2
Rohit Sharma takes guard for the first ball of the day. Sam Curran bowls the first over, with one slip in place. Shikhar Dhawan at Rohit's other end.
Three changes for England, who get Malan, Topley and Livingstone in. Morgan, Billings and Wood go out for them. One change for India. Pant replaces the injured Iyer. Match begins in 10 more minutes.
