Godzilla vs. Kong continues to storm cinema halls across the country, smashing all obstacles in its way. Despite having a mid-week release, in the midst of the second wave of the coronavirus, with lockdown in effect in certain areas in Maharashtra and Punjab, and more areas than those facing night curfews, plus 50% occupancy in theatres continuing in theatres across Maharashtra, Godzilla vs. Kong took a “monstrous” opening of Rs. 6.40 crore nett at the box office on a normal working Wednesday, the two cinematic behemoths were at it again with a fantastic hold of Rs. 5.40 crore nett on day two, Thursday, to hitherto take its box office collection to a very attractive Rs. 11.80 crore nett, dispelling all notions that movies cannot work during this time due to coronavirus restrictions in place. Godzilla vs. Kong day-wise breakup:
Day 1 (Wednesday): Rs. 6.40 crore nett
Day 2 (Thursday): Rs. 5.40 crore nett
Total (two days): Rs. 11.80 crore nett
The major collections have come from South territories where the coronavirus situations and ensuing restrictions aren't that severe, but that being said, Godzilla vs. Kong has performed better than both Roohi and Mumbai Saga released prior to it, proving that if a good movie, and particularly one offering that big-screen, 'bang for your buck' experience comes along, then moviegoers, and especially the family audience will come to the theatres. What's more, exhibitors all over the county are happy, with the three primary multiplex chains, PVR, Cinepolis and INOX, all witnessing an equal proportion of footfalls. Bollywood seriously needs to take note of this as a major wakeup call if Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, the recent Fast and Furious movies and Baahubali: The Conclusion hadn't already rung alarm bells.
