CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an enforcement officer with the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupur district and two others in connection with a bribery case.
The arrested have been identified as EPFO enforcement officer Loganayaki G and Suresh of Raghavi Associates in Chennai and his employee Ramesh Babu.
The CBI said Loganayaki had demanded a bribe from Suresh and Babu for settling issues related to violation of the EPFO Act by a Tirupur-based private firm.
The CBI intercepted Suresh and Babu when they were coming out of office chamber of Loganayaki after giving her the bribe. During searches, Rs 4 lakh unaccounted money was recovered from the office chamber of the enforcement officer.
Searches were also conducted at five places in Tirupur, Coimbatore and Chennai. A sum of Rs 6.10 lakh in cash was recovered from the premises of the enforcement officer. Certain other incriminating documents were also recovered.
A case was registered against the trio, and further investigations were on.
Apart from this, further searches led to recovery of a sum of Rs 3 lakh from the chamber of another official. The matter was being looked into, the CBI said.
