Qualcomm reportedly working on Snapdragon 780G SoC, may borrow connectivity features from Snapdragon 888

A while ago we saw reports mentioning that Qualcomm is working on a non-5G version of its Snapdragon 888 processor for smartphones. This came a few weeks after the company introduced the less powerful 8xx-series SoC, the Snapdragon 870. However, it looks like the firm is planning to bring yet another Snapdragon into the mix that will be called as Snapdragon 780G.

As mentioned in a post on Weibo, the unannounced Snapdragon 780G might borrow some features from the flagship 888 processor. This may include the FastConnect 6900 integrated mobile connectivity system for improved Wi-Fi 6e speeds and Bluetooth v5.2, along with a new Snapdragon X53 5G modem that has a maximum download speed of 3.3Gbps.

However, there is no other word on the specifics of its GPU and CPU for now. It is also speculated that some of the specs might be picked up from the existing Snapdragon 775 or 775G platforms. A round of speculation also states that Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G might be an overclocked version of 775G but with all the 888 connectivity goodies we mentioned above.

Meanwhile, the US-based chipset maker is rumoured to be working on a less powerful variant of Snapdragon 888, which it may launch later this year. According to tipster RQuandt on Twitter, the lower-end variant of the Snapdragon 888 is code named as SM8350. He adds that the processor is already in the works and there seems to be no integrated 5G modem in this one.

It's worth mentioning that the lower-end variant without an integrated 5G modem might be a good choice for markets that have not deployed the network such as India. It is being said that while the exclusion of 5G might be the key difference between SM8350 and flagship 888 SoC, Qualcomm might also remove some other features so that it doesn't eat into the market of Snapdragon 888.
