Kelly Wearstler Designs a Digital Desert Home for LeBron James’s Electric Hummer

Kelly Wearstler’s latest project is a virtual home fit for a king—King James, that is. In honor of the debut of the all-electric Hummer EV, the designer teamed up with GMC to create a house-garage hybrid centered around the new “supertruck” and its brand ambassador LeBron James.

The gorgeous home, which, sadly, exists only in cyberspace, is depicted as if nestled into the Southern California desert. That stark landscape, in tandem with the sleek, bronze-accented SUV, served as the primary inspiration for Wearstler’s design. Set behind metallic bronze gates that recall the Hummer’s “H” logo, a walled, lighted driveway leads to the bronze-roofed structure’s lower floor, a vast concrete-floored space sparsely decorated with a stone desk and seating area.

A revolving lift brings the Hummer into the center of the main floor of the “livable garage,” where it acts as a striking yet functional art piece. The sloping, wood-beamed ceilings are lined with cratered supports and is split by a wide rectangular skylight leading down to a serene indoor water feature, all of which lends the space an indoor-outdoor feel that perfectly blends the rugged desert and the sleek interiors.

The garage-house is outfitted in travertine flooring and plaster walls and ceilings, balancing out more futuristic aspects such as a cast-glass elevator and staircase. It’s dotted with CGI versions of both modern pieces like Wearstler’s own Echo bench and Monolith accent table, and antique designs including Willy Guhl’s Loop chair and Jan Ekselius’s Etcetera chair.

“The approach to the garage interior encapsulates my design philosophy, which is a mix of old soul and new spirit, the perfect combination between the Hummer’s sense of discovery and the great outdoors,” Wearstler said in a video showcasing the structure.
