National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) chairman Vijay Sampla Wednesday met two Dalit families whose members had been victims of unspeakable atricities, in Moga and Sangrur. According a report in the Indian Express, Sampla directed the Moga DC to ensure that according to the provisions of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, it should be ensured that eldest member of the victim’s family was given a pension, and a government job be given to one family member, along with free education up to graduation to eligible family members, and a piece of cultivable land as per norms.

The first family was that of two sisters, who had been brutally murdered, in village Manuke Gill, in Moga. The horrific incident took place on March 18, and the two Dalit sisters of a dhaba worker from village Shekha Khurd in Moga were brutally murdered. The police later arrested the accused who was identified as Gurvir Singh, son of the Congress-backed Sarpanch of village Shekha Khurd stated the IE report. Sampla assured the family of speedy justice. 

The second family was that of a child, who along with three other children had been subjected to physical and mental torture in Bhasaur village of Sangrur. According to news reports, this incident happened on March 7, where four boys, including a Dalit, all in the age group of 11 to 13 years, were allegedly beaten up and paraded for kilometers with their hands tied behind their backs, allegedly by the sarpanch and panchayat members of Bhasaur village in Sangrur, after they were caught in an alleged theft case. Sampla met the Dalit family at their residence in village Bhasaur and expressed his concern while assuring them that strict action against those responsible behind the inhumane act. According to news reports four persons have already been booked in the incident of Bhasaur village including the sarpanch of the village.

Sampla told the media that he had assured both the families that the Commission “will ensure that the culprits get strict punishment, without any delay and political pressure, under the relevant sections of the IPC and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The commission will also ensure that the victim gets financial assistance in accordance with laid down norms besides proper security.” Sampla is reported to have directed the administrative and police authorities of both Moga and Sangrur districts to conduct speedy investigation into the respective incidents. He said, “Cops must ensure that the guilty are brought to book.”
