Asian markets ended mixed on Thursday after a broad decline on Wall Street led by selling of tech heavyweights like Facebook and Apple. Chinese stocks stalled on concerns that big companies like Alibaba and Tencent might lose their listings on US exchanges.
Oil prices fell back after surging 6% on Wednesday on concerns over disruptions to shipping from a skyscraper-sized cargo ship wedged across Egypt’s Suez Canal.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.14%, while other regional benchmarks logged modest gains.
The Nikkei climbed to 324.36 points and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was marginally lower. SGX Nifty shed almost 1%. South Korea's Kospi ended 0.4% higher and Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 finished 0.17% higher at 6,790.60. NZX 50 in New Zealand also edged 0.24% higher.
The Shanghai Composite index ended 0.10% lower at 3,363.59 while Shenzhen closes 0.10% higher. Markets in Malaysia, Jakarta and India were also lower.
