BHUBANESWAR: The state police headquarters has streamlined the process of conferring the DGP's commendation awards on outstanding performers. While there was no fixed schedule earlier to give away such awards, the police wing has now decided to present the DGP’s commendation letters to deserving officers every year.
DGP Abhay on Wednesday issued an order, detailing the standard operating procedure (SOP), for the selection of the recipients. He has asked the heads of different establishments of the state police to strictly follow the SOP.
The DGP has been commending the officers for their outstanding work as and when it comes to his notice. However, it has now been proposed to streamline the process. The commendation will be issued as a printed signed certificate, Abhay’s circular said.
Outstanding work in the fields of investigation and prosecution, counter Maoist/terrorist operations, successful drives against drug trafficking, organised crimes, economic offences, cybercrimes, recovery of arms/ammunition and execution of non-bailable warrants, among others, would be considered for the selection of personnel for the DGP’s commendation.
The heads of the police establishments concerned will make entries about the awards in the service books of the recipients. The district police headquarters will publish an order to confer the DGP’s commendation on the personnel selected from their respective areas. The proposals for the DGP’s commendation would be sent by the district police offices to the inspector general of police (personnel) for scrutiny. Each DGP’s commendation will bear a running serial number.
If a proposal is put forth for Indian Police Medal for meritorious service, the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service, the Governor’s Medal and the DGP’s Disc Medal, such officers can be considered for DGP’s commendation certificates. Unlike the DGP’s Disc medal, which is given only to the uniformed police personnel, the DGP’s commendation letter can be given to any staff of the Odisha Police, the order said.
The commendation certificate should be handed over to the recipients in person by the heads of the police establishments. The certificates should not be sent to the recipients through post, the order read.
The state police headquarters has also decided to present the DGP’s disc medals posthumously to 46 police personnel, who died of Covid-19. Such medals would also be posthumously conferred on Debasis Sethy and Sudhir Kumar Tudu, two commandos of the Special Operations Group (SOG), who were martyred during an anti-Maoist operation in Kalahandi district on September 9 last. The medals would be given on the occasion of the 86th Odisha Police Formation Day on April 1.
