KOLKATA: A class III student of a popular English medium school on AJC Bose Road -- attending the birthday party of a classmate at a Salt Lake City Centre eatery -- was severely beaten up by the father of the birthday boy on Wednesday afternoon. The reason – the child had allegedly wanted to have a bite of the “Spiderman” topping on the cake before the birthday boy.
Following the assault that left the nine-year-old traumatized and a severely bruised back, the child’s mother lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar North police station after a thorough medical check-up at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Cops have initiated an FIR against the father – Avishek Mitra, a Salt Lake resident – and started a case under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint). “We have already started a probe into the case. We are verifying the complaint and are checking the medical reports,” said a senior official of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
The child’s mother – a school teacher – was still in disbelief about what had happened earlier in the day. She said she was right there when the party host was assaulting her son but she needed time to register that somebody could actually do so to a nine-year-old boy and that too his own son’s friend.
“What had happened at the party has left me shocked. My child is still traumatized and is in immense pain. The children had a tiff over the cake and then the man suddenly came in and flung my son away before beating him with his hands repeatedly while he was lying on the floor,” said the mother, a school teacher and Lake Town resident.
Speaking to TOI, the child’s mother seemed unrepentant as they claimed the victim child is of “unsound mind” and “needed a beating” to calm him down. “The boy was extremely naughty and was constantly poking my son. He had even hit my son several times before my husband stepped in. He only slapped him twice and didn’t beat him much. We are extremely upset because my son got beaten up in his own party,” said the child’s mother.
She went on to add that the husband only wanted to “teach the child a lesson on how to behave at a party”. “He was behaving in a weird manner. It seems like his parents neglect him a lot at home. After the incident, my husband even rebuked me for inviting the boy and his mother at the party,” she said.
