DATA STORY: India sees biggest jump in Covid cases since Nov 12, most deaths since Dec 31

India on Wednesday reported a net increase of 23,080 new active cases to take its count to 368,457. That is 36.20 per cent of the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active cases now stands at 1.74 per cent (one in 57). The country is 7th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Wednesday, it added 47,262 cases to take its total caseload to 11,734,058. And, with 275 new fatalities, its Covid-19 reached 160,441, or 1.37 per cent of total confirmed infections.

With 2,346,692 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Tuesday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 50,841,286. The count of recovered cases across India, meanwhile, reached 11,205,160 – or 95.49 per cent of total caseload – with 23,907 new cured cases being reported on Wednesday.

  • With a daily increase of 47,262 in total cases, the most in a day since November 12, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,686,796 on Tuesday to 11,734,058 – an increase of 0.4%. has reached 160,441, with 275 fatalities in a day. Now the seventh-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, third by total, and second by recovered cases, India has added 295,324 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 1.74% of all active cases globally (one in every 57 active cases), and 5.84% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).
  • India has so far vaccinated 50,841,286 people. That is 433.28 per cent of its total caseload, and 3.6581 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Rajasthan (4743837), Maharashtra (4752984), Uttar Pradesh (4653705), West Bengal (4125209), and Gujarat (3953665).
  • Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 53 days.
  • The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 23,080 on Wednesday, compared with 10,731 on Tuesday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (15402), Karnataka (1328), Chhattisgarh (1286), Tamil Nadu (775), and Madhya Pradesh (700).
  • With 23,907 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 95.49%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.37%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.96%), Maharashtra (2.17%), and Gujarat (2.12%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 24,182 — 275 deaths and 23,907 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.14%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.4%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 171.7 days, and for deaths at 404.1 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (28699), Punjab (2254), Karnataka (2010), Kerala (1985), and Chhattisgarh (1910).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Punjab (88.13%), Maharashtra (88.73%), Madhya Pradesh (95.26%), Chhattisgarh (95.58%), and Gujarat (95.60%).
  • India on Tuesday conducted 1,025,628 to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 236,438,861. The test positivity rate recorded was 4.6%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (13.63%), Goa (10.74%), Nagaland (9.04%), Ladakh (9.02%), and Kerala (8.68%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (23.44%), Chandigarh (10.41%), Goa (7%), Madhya Pradesh (6.51%), and Punjab (5.66%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (705266), J&K (439358), Kerala (363102), Karnataka (312565), and Andhra Pradesh (283513).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2533026), Kerala (1107452), Karnataka (973657), Andhra Pradesh (894536), and Tamil Nadu (869804).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 28,699 new cases to take its tally to 2533026. The state has added 235,233 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 1985 cases to take its tally to 1107452.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 2010 cases to take its tally to 973657.
  • Andhra Pradesh has added 234 cases to take its tally to 894536.
  • Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 526 to 869804.
  • Delhi has added 477 cases to take its tally to 649973.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 448 cases to take its tally to 608709.
