Facebook group enables pet dog and parent travel
While travelling for his wedding, Tam Tam dreaded leaving his pet behind
Facing many issues to travel to Kolkata, Tam Tam and his fur baby get help from dog-friendly city group

Tam Tam, a 34-year-old pet parent from Pune, was moving back to his hometown in West Bengal and had uploaded a Facebook post on a dog group, putting his dog Lucy up for adoption. Tam Tam was moving back to Kolkata for good and was sceptical of carrying his pet along with him due to the pet’s travel anxiety, unavailability of flight tickets and tricky travel process for pets.

The members of the group, ‘Dog Friendly Pune’, discouraged Tam Tam from putting up the pet for adoption and instead helped him in every possible way to get the tickets done and get permissions for the dog’s travel. Two days back, Tam Tam and his beloved pet Lucy reached Kolkata by train, thus setting a right example to follow.

Tam Tam had adopted Lucy, a stray dog, four years ago and the duo has been inseparable since then. The post put up by Tam Tam moved several people and they were ready to lend a helping hand so he could take his pet back to his hometown.

In his Facebook post, Tam Tam wrote, “I adopted her from Dhanori four years ago and promised her that I would take good care of her and love her throughout, which I did and still do. However, now that I have to relocate to Kolkata, she can’t tag along with me. I am helpless and desperately seeking for someone or a family who would love her and take care of her like their own child. I hate to even imagine my world without her as; she has been a part of me in both good and bad times of my life, in Pune.”

This Facebook group, “Dog Friendly Pune”, as the name suggests is a group of like-minded individuals striving to make it a better community for pet dogs, their parents and the stray dogs. This community is also the one which encourages people to adopt stray dogs or abandoned animals, pointing out that they need more care than any other dog breed.

The members of this group contacted Tam Tam, counselled him, put forth various options of travel in front of him and helped him through the actual process of taking his pet along with him to Kolkata.

Tam Tam in a few days had his wedding planned, and had to move to Kolkata for the same. He explained how he tried several ways out but it wasn’t possible for him to take along Lucy with him, given all the restrictions.

Speaking about the experience, Tam Tam said, “There were a number of problems that I had to consider before taking Lucy along and I was helpless considering the situation and the lack of funds. There were no tickets available, the flight wasn’t allowing pet transport and the road trip was costing me a fortune. Nevertheless, I kept trying and looking for options that would work best for both of us. There are several people who got in touch and helped me out to make the journey a success and changed my mind about putting Lucy up for adoption.”

The post was flooded by comments and each one tried doing his/her best to help Tam Tam out.

Pourish Irani, one of the pet lovers who owns a pet taxi service, said, “On reading his post, I got in touch with him and offered taxi service for Tam Tam and his pet. I told him that since he’s running low on budget, I would offer him the taxi service on a no-profit-noloss basis.”

Deepika Deb, another member of the group, added, “Guidance was provided about how he could book the tickets and take the pet along without any hassle.”
