Tamil Nadu reported 1,636 new
Covid-19 cases till noon on Wednesday after the state took samples from 80,293 people for RT-PCR tests. The Covid-19 registry added 12 deaths and revised the cumulative toll to 12,630. The case tally in Tamil Nadu reached 871,440.
Nearly 39% of the fresh cases were in Chennai, which reported 633 cases on Wednesday.
The three neighbouring districts – Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur – together added 320 cases. After Chennai, Chengalpet (178) had the highest number of new cases. While Tiruvallur reported 86 new cases, Kancheepuram reported 56. The region together reported 953 cases and nine deaths.
At least 40 cases reported among 52 students in a medical college in Kancheepuram were not included in Wednesday’s report as the results arrived in the afternoon, district public health officer Dr V K Palani said.
Coimbatore reported 147 new cases. In the central region, Thanjavur reported 72 new cases. All districts reported fresh cases on Wednesday. Perambalur, which reported one new case, had nine active cases. With seven Covid-19 patients under treatment, Kallakurichi had the least number of active cases.
As many as 94,341 people, including 38,167 senior citizens and 33,323 people aged between 45 and 59 years (with comorbid conditions), took the Covid-19 vaccine on Wednesday. The vaccine recipient tally touched 24,40,448 on the 60th day of vaccination.
