Assembly Election 2021 News LIVE Updates: Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda has released party manifesto ‘Sankalp Patra’ for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in Assam. Sources told News18 that BJP’s poll papers will include a promise on implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA), 10 lakh jobs for youth, dedicated tourist circuit for Barack and Brahmaputra areas and direct benefits transfer in women account through Arunodaya scheme. There could be special focus on protecting linguistic identity of Assam and special incentive for the tea garden workers.

Elections for the 126-seat Assam assembly are scheduled to take place in three phases from March 27 to April 6. The results will be announced on May 2. In 2016, the BJP scripted history and formed the government for the first time in the state ending Congress’s 15-year rule. BJP and its allies AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly. BJP had bagged 60 seats, AGP 14, and BPF 12 seats. This time the BPF has joined the Congress-led coalition ‘Mahajath’ after breaking away from the BJP-led BJP is contesting the polls in Assam in alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) alliance.

Meanwhile, in poll-bound Tamil Nadu, seizure of cash and kind valued at Rs 231.63 crore has been recovered by various enforcement agencies so far, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said on Monday. Sahoo, responding to reporters’ queries on the sudden spurt in coronavirus cases in the state and if it will have a bearing on the polls, said “everything is going as per plan and we are in close touch with the health department.” “And whatever Standard Operating Procedures they are asking us to follow or asking the general public to follow..is being done.. so election will be held (as planned),” he said.

BJP's Nandigram Nominee Suvendu Adhikari Harbouring Criminals: TMC Tells EC | The Trinamool Congress has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission accusing BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of "harbouring criminals" in Nandigram, where he is pitted against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The ruling party in the state also alleged that outsiders of the high-profile constituency have been staying at four locations there. The TMC also charged Adhikari, the protege-turned- adversary of Banerjee, of visiting one of these locations. Listing out details of the seizure done by flying squads, static surveillance teams, IT personnel and others, Sahoo said cash constituted Rs 83.99 crore out of the Rs 231 crore recovery. Precious metals, apparently gold, worth Rs 130.51 crore and liquor valued at Rs 1.70 crore have also been seized, he added.

Over 2,000 complaints regarding violation of model code of conduct have been received and cases filed, he said, adding preventive arrest of 8,158 persons has been effected. According to Sahoo, Tamil Nadu’s total voters were 6,29,43,512, with women outnumbering men.

While the state had 3.09 crore male voters, females numbered 3.19 crore. There were as many as 7,192 third gender members. Single phase polling to 234 Assembly seats are scheduled on April 6 in Tamil Nadu, with the ruling AIADMK seeking to retain power, while the DMK aims to make a comeback, with Makkal Needhi Maiam and Nam Tamizhar Katchi being the other expected significant players. Polled votes will be counted on May 2.
