Point Pleasant man arrested on drug charge

Mar. 22—MASON — The Mason Police Department reportedly found a .38 revolver which was allegedly stolen, along with reported methamphetamines and cash, when they made a traffic stop Thursday night.

A Point Pleasant man remained in the Western Regional Jail Monday, after being arrested by the Mason Police Department following a traffic stop on Thursday night.

According to Mason Police Chief Colton McKinney, Zachary Scott Shaw, 19, was arrested by Sgt. Tyler Doss and Patrolman River Griffith following the stop on Second Street in Mason.

During the stop, McKinney said a search of the vehicle was completed, and found were an allegedly stolen .38 revolver, 0.5 grams of suspected methamphetamines, small plastic bags, a scale, and $1,681 cash. Shaw was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver and receiving and transferring stolen goods.

Bond was set at $50,000, according to McKinney.

People who could afford higher rents before the pandemic have, more generally, been able to work from home and subsequently migrated to the suburbs, leaving their city apartments vacant, which "placed downward pressure on rents." But not everyone who moved left their cities. Some folks instead chose to "move down the housing ladder to save money," which added to a pre-existing logjam for affordable housing. A "surge in demand for lower-price-point homes ended up bidding those rents higher," Rampell writes. Rampell suggests the increases may also be an unintended consequence of the federal eviction moratorium, which may have led landlords to raise rents for some tenants in the hopes of offsetting the losses stemming from others falling behind on their payments. Lower-income tenants also just have less leverage than high-income tenants. "They don't have money to move elsewhere, and landlords know they have them over a barrel," said Sandy Rollins, executive director of the Texas Tenants' Union. Read more at The Washington Post.
