Francesco, the film about His Holiness Pope Francis by Oscar nominated director and producer Evgeny Afineevksy, will be available to watch in South Africa.
The film will air on Discovery Channel (DStv 121) on Sunday, 4 April at 22:00 and will provide an intimate look at the global leader through unprecedented access.
According to a statement by Discovery the documentary will take audiences on a worldwide journey and cover several topics including climate change, migration and refugees, women’s empowerment, sexual abuse, the LGBTQ+ community, the pandemic, border walls, and many more headlines.
Interviews featured will include those who have been part of the pope’s journey, including his nephew Jose Ignacio Bergoglio, His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, as well as Juan Carlos Cruz, a victim and activist for survivors of sexual abuse, and Sister Norma Pimentel, an advocate for refugees.
"I am tremendously honoured that Pope Francis allowed me to witness and create this inspirational monument dedicated to the most pressing issues facing humanity today. His commitment to people around the world will lead us out of this difficult historical moment and into a brighter future. He is a beacon of light in this world for many and strives every day to enlighten people on how to build a bridge to a better tomorrow," says Afineevksy.
The New York Times reported that Pope Francis, 84, recently made history as the first head of the Catholic Church to visit Iraq during a three-day whirlwind tour that took place despite pandemic and security fears.
The pope also made headlines earlier this month when he definitively signalled the limits to his reformist intentions by signing off on a Vatican decree that reaffirms old church teaching and bars priests from blessing same-sex unions, The Washington Post reported.
