India handed an ODI debut to Krunal Pandya in the series opener against England in Pune on Tuesday which meant that the Pandya Brothers will be seen together in action for the first time in the 50-over format. Hardik handed the cap to his elder brother before the start of play in an emotional moment for the Pandyas who lost their father in January this year.

Krunal has already represented India in 18 T20Is and was in terrific form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year. Captaining Baroda, he scored 388 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 117.93 with two hundreds and as many fifties while also chipping in with 5 wickets at a restrictive economy rate of 5.31. Hardik has already played 57 ODIs for the country and at 115.43 has the highest strike rate in India’s ODI history.

Incidentally, another pair of siblings – Tom and Sam Curran are playing for England in their XI today.

The Pandya Brothers had created history in 2019 when they became the third pair of brothers to play together for India in the T20I series opener against New Zealand in Wellington.

Mohinder and Surinder Amarnath played three ODIs together while Irfan and Yusuf Pathan played in 8 ODIs and as many T20Is together for the country.

Many famous pairs of brothers have represented their countries together in cricket over the years. Some of the more famous names include Mark and Steve Waugh, Greg and Ian Chappell, Yusuf and Irfan Pathan, Michael and David Hussey, Mitchell and Shaun Marsh, Grant and Andy Flower and Brendon and Nathan McCullum.

The Pathan brothers had played together for the very first time for India in the final of the World T20 against Pakistan in Johannesburg in 2007.  While Yusuf was making his debut, Irfan was the Player of the Match for his magnificent spell of bowling with returns of 3-16 in 4 overs,

Yusuf and Irfan played their first ODI together for India against Pakistan in Dhaka in 2008. The pair last featured in the same XI in India colours in March 2012 in a T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg – the same venue where they were first seen together in the Indian jersey.

Mohinder and Surinder Amarnath featured in the same Indian XI against Pakistan in Quetta in 1978 – the first time the two Amarnath brothers were representing their country together in a match.

Interestingly, Mohinder Amarnath was the Player of the Match in this encounter. Irfan Pathan was the Player of the Match when he first played with his brother against Pakistan in the final of the World T20 in 2007.
