Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas on Tuesday announced its first new CEO in more than 30 years.

Justin Doss, a former president and CEO of Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, will take over as chief executive in Beaumont May 3.

In Corpus Christi, Doss oversaw a six-campus system with 1,000 beds. Before being named to that position, he spent nine years with HCA Healthcare, first as as an associate administrator with the Methodist Health System in San Antonio and later in chief operating officer roles in Florida and Texas.

He will replace David Parmer, who is retiring as Baptist CEO after more than 30 years.

Parmer will continue in an advisory role for two years, assisting in the transition.

Doss has a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and an MBA from the University of Texas-San Antonio. He will move to Beaumont with his wife, Amy, and their three children.

“I’m looking forward to joining the talented and committed physicians, leaders, clinicians and support teams at BHSET, and serving Beaumont and surrounding communities,” Doss said in a statement.

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas was founded in 1945 to answer a shortage of hospital beds in Beaumont.

Parmer joined Baptist in 1989 after administration experience with hospitals and health groups in Louisiana. He previously worked as a controller with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs before graduate school at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Services at the Beaumont hospital expanded under his tenure. In 2017, Baptist joined with the Cancer Center of Southeast Texas and Altus Cancer Center to create the Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas Regional Cancer Network.

In 2016, the decision was made to close the emergency room at the former Orange hospital, ending Baptist’s services in that area.
