Celebrated 100m speedster Akani Simbine will headline Athletics South Africa's first track and field event in the Covid-19 era when the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium in Roodepoort in Johannesburg hosts the ASA Athletix Invitational Meet powered by AVANTI on Tuesday afternoon.
The meet breaks the ice from a competitive perspective in a sport that has also been badly affected by Covid-19.
Simbine, the South African 100m record holder and Commonwealth Games champion, will line up against rising star Luxolo Adams and Sinesipho Dambile, who was a silver medallist at the 4x200m relays at the 2019 World Relays in Yokohama.
Multiple African, Commonwealth, World Championship and Olympic medallist javelin athlete Sunette Viljoen will also be part of the proceedings where she'll be dealing with a double Czech Republic challenge in the form of Nikola Tabachkova and Nikola Ogrodnikova.
The former is a 2017 Under-20 European Championship gold medallist with a personal best of 57.50m while the latter won silver at the European Championships in 2018 with a personal best throw of 67.40m.
The men's and women's 400m events will also be a drawcard with accomplished Botswana athlete Isaac Makwala, an African and Commonwealth Games champion, lining up against the up and coming 18-year-old Lythe Pillay.
Amantle Montsho, a 2011 women's 400m metre world champion from Botswana, will also be taking part.
