Public lecture on Innovative leadership for medicinal plants used for healthcare for northeast region

A public lecture was organised by Institute of Bioresoucres and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Takyelpat on February 23, 2021 on "Innovative leadership for medicinal plants used for healthcare for northeast region".

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Y.K. Gupta, President, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal and AIIMS, Jammu. IBSD is working on conservation and sustainable utilisation of bio-resources for the socio-economic development of North Eastern Region.

The primary objectives of IBSD are to study and document the unique biodiversity of the region, develop bio-technological interventions for sustainable development and utilization of bio-resources of the region and generate technological packages for employment generation and economic progress.

IBSD has been working on promotion of traditional medicine, medicinal plants and healthcare practices for their documentation, quality evaluation and validation with the leadership of Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director of IBSD, Imphal.

The phytopharmaceutical mission programme has been initiated in this context for scientific evaluation and validation of those traditional healthcare practices using translational research approach.

Today's public lecture was organised in this context for promotion and development of medicinal plants of Manipur. Prof. Y.K. Gupta is an expert in the area of ethnopharmacology and drug development from natural resources who has been working in closed collaboration with Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee and his team.

Prof Y.K. Gupta is also President of AIIMS, Jammu, Principal Adviser (Project), THSTI-DBT, Govt. of India and Chairman, Board of Directors, BIBC01, DBT, Govt. of India. He visited IBSD, Imphal today and delivered the lecture which has inspired the scientists, research scholars and students of the institute.

During his lecture, Prof. Y.K. Gupta highlighted the need of innovative steps to utilize the rich bioresources of Manipur and NE region in for increasing the productivity and income of local people, improvement of health and well being.

With the global acceptance of lesser side effects and efficacy, the drugs of plants origin are becoming very important and this region has very huge potential in this direction. Prof. Gupta also mentioned that during his meeting with chief minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh was very enthusiastic in supporting any effort in this area.
