The Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday created ruckus in the Assembly through an adjournment motion and on the streets with their protest march to the Assembly leading to a scuffle with the police and causing injuries to several persons, including journalists.

The RJD legislators moved the motion against the Bihar Special Armed Police Bill, 2021 raising slogans against it. The Speaker adjourned the House till 2 p.m. The Bill, which was introduced last week, seeks to rename the Bihar Military Police and empower it to arrest people without a warrant.

The RJD took out a rally against what it termed deteriorating law and order, corruption, inflation and unemployment. “The NDA in its manifesto had promised to provide 19 lakh jobs in Bihar. What happened to that promise? Corruption is at an all time high these days and the law and order has nosedived at an alarming level,” alleged RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav earlier in the day.

Mr. Yadav and his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav launched their protest march from the J.P. statue near Gandhi Maidan here to lay seige to the Assembly.

There was heavy police deployment at the Dak Bungalow intersection with barricades to foil the march. However, the RJD leaders and workers, without wearing masks, kept moving towards the Assembly. The police used water cannons to disperse them. Later, they resorted to baton charge raining blows on the RJD workers fleeing to every nook and cranny of the area. All shops remained shut.

Several policemen and RJD workers received injuries and a few vehicles were damaged in stone throwing. Some media persons too were injured. Later, the Yadav brothers were arrested and removed to restore traffic movement at the city’s main thoroughfare.

“This is the real character of the RJD. They believe in violence and they keep reminding people what the RJD stands for,” said JD(U) leader Ajay Alok.
