Ravichandran Ashwin, who is gearing for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), recently proved that he follows cricket fondly even if he is not playing. The off-spinner took to social media to share a cheeky post on South African cricketer Laura Wolvaardt’s dismissal.
His tweet came during the second India Women vs South Africa Women T20I. Laura Wolvaardt was going strong in Lucknow and has been a find for the South African women's team in the ongoing white-ball series.
Ashwin in his tweet asked whether a soft signal could be the procedure to get her out. The seasoned campaigner of the Indian team shifted focus to women's cricket writing, "What is the procedure to get Laura out now? Can u send a soft signal to her? #INDvSA.”
Ashwin’s tweet garnered admiration and praise from many fans and followers who remarked that the Test specialist is taking keen interest in women’s cricket. His post also got noticed by England’s Alex Hartley who lavished praise on him after it was revealed that Ashwin was keeping tabs on the India vs South Africa T20I.
Hartley expressed her satisfaction at seeing his genuine interest in the women’s game, and hoped it would prompt others to follow suit.
Hartley has been in headlines for all the wrong reasons lately. After England lost the pink ball Test to India, she put out a light-hearted post on the micro-blogging platform. Her tweet was largely misread and attracted backlash and criticism from players around the world. She was called out for being insensitive.
India lost to South Africa in the second T20I, losing by six wickets. South Africa got an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Set a target of 159, South Africa were brilliant from the start. Laura Wolvaardt was a star turnout as she scored the winning runs for her side. Her blistering 39 ball 53 (unbeaten) was the difference between the two sides.
