NZ vs BAN 2nd ODI: In bizarre incident, 3rd umpire overturns Tamim Iqbal’s caught and bowled; Watch video- After a crushing defeat in the 1st ODI, luck seemed to have favoured Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval on Monday. After surviving a run-out scare, Iqbal was caught and bowled by Kyle Jamieson in the 15th over.

While the on-field umpire gave a soft signal of out, after referring to the third umpire, the decision was overturned, favouring the batsman. Jamieson did catch the ball but in TV replays, it was shown that he could not control the ball completely. As the ball touched the ground immediately after taking the catch, the umpire deemed that Jamieson did not have full control of the ball.
As per rules, the fielder, in this case, the bowler, must have full control of the ball and it should not touch the ground immediately.
“The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement,” Section 33.3 of the MCC’s Laws says.
But here, the gray area is the amount of time one fielder can take. Hence, Jamieson and his New Zealand teammates were livid at the decision. As for Iqbal, he was sure he was out as he started walking but stopped after it was referred to the third-umpire.
Iqbal was on 34 when the incident took place. He went on to score 78, helping Bangladesh survive early pressure from Kiwi bowlers. The southpaw’s knock, besides unbeaten 73 from Mohammad Mithun helped the visitors post 271/6 in 50 overs.
Bangladesh lost the first match by eight wickets after they were bundled for 131. New Zealand chased the target in only 21.2 overs, losing just two wickets. Henry Nicholls top-scored with 49 off 53 balls.
