Covid-19: Cases increase by 599 and the death toll increases by 85

  • South Africa has recorded a total of 1 538 451 Covid-19 cases.
  • The country recorded 599 new cases in the past 24 hours.
  • The death toll increased to 52 196 after 85 new Covid-19-related deaths were recorded.


South Africa recorded 599 more Covid-19 infections by 22 March, and 85 deaths, taking the death toll to 52 196.

One death was recorded in the Eastern Cape, two in the Free State, five in Gauteng, 70 in KwaZulu-Natal, and seven in the Western Cape.

This increases the death toll to 52 196.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

He said the total number of cases amounted to 1 538 451.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 26.8% of the total, which translates to 411 601 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 333 021 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 281 307 cases and the Eastern Cape 194 894 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has 6 217 active cases - the highest in the country - followed by the Western Cape's 5 040 and the Northern Cape's 2 658.

The recovery rate stands at 95%.

To date, 9 649 219 tests have been completed.
