Competition Will Bring the Best Out of Yuzvendra Chahal, feels Deep Dasgupta

He also went on to add that he is happy to see Kuldeep Yadav return to the ODI fold and hoped that he gets a few games because he has only been a 'passenger' over the last two years.

Competition Will Bring the Best Out of Yuzvendra Chahal, feels Deep Dasgupta

Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta feels that Yuzvendra Chahal's form has been a little off lately but with the amount of competition around now, it will force him to up his game in the upcoming ODI series against world champions England. The series starts on Tuesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Chahal only played four ODIs in 2020 and picked up seven wickets after grabbing 29 wickets each in 2019 and 2018. Not only that, in T20Is as well, he has failed to make a mark lately. In his last 13 T20Is, he has picked up more than one wicket on only one occasion. In the recent T20Is against the Three Lions, he picked up just three wickets in three games with an economy of over eight and was replaced by Rahul Chahar for the last two games.

But, Dasgupta feels that with plenty of spinners around, Chahal will have to up his game to remain in contention and play games for India.

"He (Chahal) has looked a little off the boil this series. With Rahul Chahar coming in and performing, there are a lot of right-arm wrist-spinners, let alone wrist-spinners. I am sure he would have got a wake-up call there. I am sure he will up his game as well because he knows there is a fair amount of competition," Dasgupta told Sports Today on Tuesday.

He also went on to add that he is happy to see Kuldeep Yadav return to the ODI fold and hoped that he gets a few games because he has only been a 'passenger' over the last two years.

Kuldeep last played a T20I for India in January 2020 against Sri Lanka while his last ODI was in December 2020 against Australia Down Under, where he picked up 1/57. Even in last year's Indian Premier League (IPL), Kuldeep just played five games for Kolkata Knight Riders, where he picked up only one wicket.

The chinaman bowler has been taken for runs lately and struggled to settle into his rhythm and that has seen him drop out of contention as India went ahead with Chahal while KKR preferred Varun Chakravarty over him in the United Arab Emirates. The England series will therefore give him a chance at redemption and an opportunity to return to the limited-overs fold with the World T20 later this year in India.

The first ODI will be played in Pune on Tuesday.
