Schools, colleges in Chandigarh to remain close till March 31 due to COVID-19 surge

An order from the Chandigarh administration's Director of Education said that it would revisit its decision to hold in-person exams for Classes 9 &11.

Due to the rising COVID-19 cases, the Chandigarh administration on Monday ordered all schools and colleges in the union territory to be closed until March 31. This development comes as the Union Territory reports a second surge of COVID-19 cases.

An order from the Chandigarh administration's Director of Education said that it would revisit its decision to hold in-person exams for Classes 9 and 11. A revised schedule, if necessary, will be issued later.

However, the teaching and non-teaching staff in schools and colleges will have to report to work as usual. 

Online exams from third to eighth grade will be conducted according to the datasheet. The decision for conducting the exams for classes 9th and 11th will be taken soon.

Currently, the active cases in Chandigarh is 1979. 208 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. So far 363 people have died due to COVID-19.

Restrictions imposed in Chandigarh

Holi celebrations cancelled in Chandigarh and people have been ordered to celebrate the Holi festival in their homes. No Holi event will be allowed in hotels, restaurants, or clubs. 

All eating joints will be closed by 11 pm at night. The last order will be taken at 10 pm. All eating places, hotels, restaurants, and eating joints inside malls will be opened with 50% capacity.

Strict monitoring of COVID-19 appropriate behavior at crowded places like Sukhna Lake, Apni Mandis, markets, and malls.

Municipal Corporation will allow vegetable and fruit vendors to sell produce in carts in various residential areas to reduce crowds in Apni Mandis and wholesale market in Sector 26, Chandigarh.

Permission will have to be taken from DC for any kind of social and political gathering and even wedding program in Chandigarh. DC will decide on the number of guests to be permitted.

It will be the responsibility of the organizer of the wedding ceremony, political gathering, or any kind of event that all the guests should come wearing a mask.

It is forbidden to organize any kind of exhibition and fair in Chandigarh.

Permission has been granted to run the already running exhibition and fairs till the scheduled time.

The front-line workers, including the health workers, police officials, and municipal officials, must come forward to get themselves vaccinated. 

Administrator VP Singh Badnore has appealed to all councilors, market association officials, resident welfare associations, and local leaders to motivate people to get vaccinated.
