  • Proteas star batter Laura Wolvaardt expressed her satisfaction with the depth and performances within the side.
  • Having won the ODI series 4-1, South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 series lead in the three-match T20 series with a final-ball thriller to win on Sunday.
  • Wolvaardt stated that she hopes the Proteas women can continue to ride the wave of confidence.

The Proteas women are riding the crest of a wave following the side's comprehensive series victories in the ODIs and T20s against India in Lucknow.

On Sunday, the Proteas secured their first-ever T20 series victory in India with a thrilling last-ball win in the second T20.

Head coach Hilton Moreeng's charges, who sealed a 4-1 ODI series triumph last week, now take an unassailable 2-0 lead with one game remaining to complete their highly successful Indian tour.

This is the Proteas women's fourth consecutive series win since returning to international cricket in January from the coronavirus induced break.

Star batter Laura Wolvaardt, who struck an unbeaten 53 on Sunday to get the Proteas over the line, acknowledged that their side is just "clicking" at the moment.

"This is also the first time in a long time we are all feeling it (the confidence) together. We are starting to click together, and performances are coming from every player. It's just awesome," Wolvaardt told reporters on Sunday after her player-of-the-match performance.

"We have that momentum at the moment, and we want to keep it as long as we can.

"I'm happy with what's going on with the team, and if we can ride this wave and keep this confidence up for a long time, that would be awesome."

What makes historic white-ball double triumph more significant was that it was achieved without power duo of skipper Dane van Niekerk and Chloe Tryon, who are yet to return this year following injuries.

In the ODI series, stand-in skipper Sune Luus was out for two games, while the number-one ranked ODI batter Lizelle Lee was rested for one game.

Wicketkeeper-batter Trisha Chetty, who played in three ODIs, was also out with an injury, and Sunday's T20 also saw the absence of all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who was rested.

It highlighted the depth within the Proteas squad as the young guns delivered like seasoned veterans in Lucknow.

Wolvaardt expressed her delight with the team's current composition going forward, adding that this would bring the best out of the side.

"In the past, one of the gaps between us and the big nations was the [lack of] depth in the side. If we had a keeper or Dane missing the tour, it would've been tough to fill their spot," she said.

"I'm extremely proud of how our young, inexperienced players stepped up on this tour, and I think some healthy competition as a whole will be very good for our side going forward.

"We are raising the bar for each other and I'm really glad to see it happening."

The final T20 on Tuesday starts at 15:30 SA time.
