LUCKNOW: A police sub-inspector in Basti was arrested on Monday following charges of sexual harassment by a woman.
"Sub-inspector Deepak Singh was suspended two days ago and an FIR was also lodged against him under the charges of sexual harassment late Sunday night," said a senior police officer.
The officer also said that according to the allegations, in June last year accused SI Singh had stopped the survivor woman for not wearing a mask during checking. He allegedly took her phone number and started sending objectionable messages. When objected to, he threatened her with fake FIRs.
Later, in the same village where the woman resided, an argument over a road took place and the SI got several FIRs registered against the woman’s family.
The woman later complained to the state women commission and CM Yogi Adityanath and an inquiry was conducted on the directions of the state home department.
ADG Gorakhpur Zone Akhil Kumar confirmed TOI about the arrest and also said that an inquiry against him was being done by a committee which includes DM and IG.
DM Basti Saumya Agarwal has also ordered a probe into property of Deepak Singh.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
