How to fix the slow performance

Discussion created by Naoki Tsuji on Mar 22, 2021

I updated from windows 7 to windows 10. Then I faced a slow performance issue that I didn't have before.

The noticeable matters are

- Delay when editing dimensions in sketch (with dimension dialog box).

- Delay when selecting multiple sketch segments.

- Too slow start and close(with save) System Options.

etc.

As I continue to work, it become slower and slower.

However, when I checked it in Task Manager, the CPU usage was not very high.

Also, these issues occurred regardless of the SW version.

I tried changing the graphic driver settings, stopping the security application, and reinstalling SW, but there was no change.

Next, I tried to find out what was happening with"Process Monitor" (a diagnostic app. by MicroSoft).

When I extracted the results other than "SUCCESS" from the huge process, I was attention about the notation "FILE LOCKED WITH ONLY READERS".

I thought it was a problem with the access rights to the registries and files, so I tried to start SW with "Run as administrator".

Bingo!  The delays mentioned above are gone, and startups and opening / saving files are much faster too.

However, if you are using a 3D mouse or a mouse to which additional functions can be assigned, that driver must also be started with "Run as administrator".

You can find out in internet how to use the windows "Task Scheduler" to start automatically with "Run as administrator".

There are various causes for slow performance issue, so it may not be solved in all cases, but if you are in trouble, try it once.

P.S.

When I log with "Process Monitor", huge processes to access the registry to find the "Serial Number" and the key named "SW JOURNALING" are repeated.

Even addresses that are not in it are repeatedly open and closed, and in particular, the key named "SW JOURNALING" does not exist anywhere.

They look like useless processes,, so I'm wondering if they have negative impact on performance.

If someone SolidWorks engineer sees this, I want opinion if this is normal.
