Pune: English captain Eoin Morgan said on Monday that the medical staff would determine whether Jofra Archer would return to India this year to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Morgan’s remark comes when Archer is considered unfit for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. The patient was also excluded from the initial phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.
‘To be honest, I can not give a medical opinion. We know the situation with his elbow, it gradually got worse. We know it needs to be investigated, only time will tell. “He has given us his heart and soul since he was involved, so we will give him our full attention to try to achieve the best possible result,” Morgan said during a virtual press conference on Monday.
‘It all depends on the outcome of the investigation that the medical team will do (Archer’s return to India for IPL). They will determine the best rehabilitation program that comes back and we will go from there. We fully trust our medical team, they have excellent achievements regarding the well-being of players and rehabilitation of players. The trust is always there, “he added.
Archer returns to the UK for further management and investigation into his right elbow injury. Archer’s elbow issue deteriorated over the course of the five-game T20I series, making it increasingly challenging for him to maintain performance levels. The ECB’s medical team will now assess the player and work with Jofra to develop a treatment plan and a feedback program. As a result, Jofra will miss the start of this year’s IPL.
Asked about the ODI series against India, Morgan said: ‘We have a lot of options, we are spoiled for choice. Throughout the ODI series you will get more chances than we got in the T20I series, so yes, it’s going to be exciting. Playing three one-day matches on the same ground against a very strong Indian team is a great opportunity for everyone to go there and get into the 50-year-old format.
“Winning the ODI series is not a consolation prize, it is a great opportunity for the guys who were on the edge here. If you score runs or take wickets away from home, there is a big incentive to try to push your case forward. We have ODI Super League points at stake to qualify for the next World Cup. ”
Asked whether England would like to play ODIs as an extension of T20 cricket, Morgan said: ‘I do not think there is a strong enough argument. I think since the 50-over format was probably so close to T20, there are certain familiar scenarios that can work themselves out. There are pockets of the game that repeat T20 cricket. There is a very limited change between both groups, guys are skilled enough to play both formats even though it is the T20 World Cup year. ‘
