Rajya Sabha adjourned till 1400 hrs amid ruckus over Mumbai police extortion racket

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 1400 hrs on Monday following a ruckus by the Treasury Bench over the alleged Mumbai police extortion case.

As the ‘Question Hour` began, the Treasury Bench tried to raise the issue against the Congress and Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra in connection with the former Maharashtra DGP's letter alleging that the state Home Minister was running an extortion racket.

Denying permission, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said that since there was no notice, he cannot allow anyone to speak on the issue and directed that nothing would be going on record.

Despite best efforts of the Chair, the verbal duel between treasury and opposition benches continued and Mr Naidu refused to listen the ruling party members and initiated Question Hour amidst din.

The Opposition Bench also protested against the charges and a series of allegations and counter-allegations led to a pandemonium in the House.

“It is not clear what the protest is about as the Chairman has given clear instructions that the protest should not be shown on TV”, Mr Naidu said.

Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar stood up and made some comments on the ruling coalition Government of Maharashtra which were retaliated by the Opposition.

By that time, Deputy Chairman Hari Vansh took over the chair saying that nothing will go on record and asked BJP Member to ask the question from the Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Minister Naqvi also replied amid din and the Deputy Chairman tried his level best to continue the proceedings despite the ruckus but both sides were not ready to relent, causing a noisy scene in the House.

When the Chair’s advise fell on deaf ears of the agitating Members, he adjourned the House till 1400 hrs.
