Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has named a player in the squad who has quietly gone about his task in the recent past. According to him, Shardul Thakur is responsible for India winning the T20I series 3-2. Zaheer termed the medium-pacer as the ‘silent hero’ of India’s triumph over England.

While speaking on Cricbuzz, the former cricketer said that despite the presence of the big guns including Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer, Shardul made a significant impression in the series and did the job for the team.

Adding that Shardul’s numbers are as good as any top player, Zaheer reckoned that the youngster’s breakthrough timing was a standout. In the fourth T20I, Shardul sent a dangerous-looking Ben Stokes and England skipper Eoin Morgan back to the dressing room. His consecutive deliveries were crucial in shifting the momentum of the game. Talking about Shardul’s key dismissals, Zaheer discussed Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow’s wickets which the pacer scalped in the same over.

According to him, Shardul has been a different player from the Australia series in particular. He pointed out that his confidence of the Brisbane Test has totally transformed the fast bowler’s perspective towards his game. Shardul scored a crucial fifty in the Gabba Test and picked up significant wickets to play an important part in India’s historic win.

The 29-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in the recently concluded T20I series versus England. He ended the campaign with eight wickets in five matches with an average of 21. His economy rate was 9.69, but finished with a strike rate of 13.

“Thakur is already at a stage where he knows what’s best for him and what he needs to avoid. Put him in any situation and he will thrive,”said Zaheer on Cricbuzz.

Shardul is part of the 18-member squad that will take on England in the three-match ODI series from March 23 in Pune.
