MANGALURU: Nearly 63% of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Dakshina Kannada district recovered at home, data from the district health department shows.
Of the total 34,935 people infected since the pandemic struck, 21,970 opted for home isolation. As on Wednesday, of the 378 active cases, 273 were in home isolation while the rest were in hospital. So far, only one home isolation death was reported.
“Home isolation, which the government permitted in May last year, has helped in the physical, social, mental and financial well-being of Covid-19 patients,” said Dr Ramachandra Bairy, district health officer. He also said people in home isolation recover faster than those treated in hospitals. “There is less psychological pressure and it helps increase natural immunity,” he said.
Data also shows that of the 741 people who died due to Covid since the pandemic struck, 520 were male. The highest deaths (146 deaths) were in 51-60 years age group, 231 deaths in the 61 to 70 years group and 162 deaths in the 71 to 80 years group. In the 0-30 years age group, 15 deaths have been reported so far. The fatalities include 205 who died at District Wenlock Hospital.
