The People of National Capital loses if NCT bill passed

  • | Friday | 19th March, 2021

The politics behind the law appears clear. If NCT is passed, it will violate the spirit of Republicanism. For all practical purposes, Delhi will no longer have an elected government and will be administered by the LG, leaving the citizens of Delhi who have voted for this government out in the cold and at the only mercy of the Central Government. And the only losers will be the ordinary government.

NCT abbreviated as the National Capital Territory (Amendment bill 2021) was introduced by the center in Lok Sabha. This bill seeks to serve overarching powers to the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) in the functioning of the National capital. This brings a complete change in the way how the national capital is administered. It conceals more than it reveals since it contains no substantive reference to the purpose of the bill. Rather in its statement turn the issue on its head and undermines not only the 2018 judgment of the Supreme Court of India but also certain provisions of the Constitution of India.

The Lieutenant Governor is of the NCT is not elected instead nominated in a purely political process by the President of India, working on the advice of the Union cabinet ministers, he is hence a political appointee.

NCT holds special federal attention, it is the capital of India, but it also has an elected legislative assembly for which the voters vote. The Aam Aadmi party assumed power with a clear social and economic agenda and is in a clear vision to derail the implementation of this agenda.
