Chaavu Kaburu Challaga, starring Kartikeya and Lavanya Tripathi, is a love drama that tries to entertain the audience with a bit of comedy and also with an emotional angle. What the film tries to tell is this: love can happen to anyone at any age and with any person, and that the emotions one feels when you are in love are real.
The undercurrent of sentiment can be felt throughout the film. While the first half was windy, things did not go so smoothly in the second half as the emotional episodes were overwhelming. Kartikeya plays Basti Balaraju, who can go to any extent to get what he wants.
If he is angry or emotional, he drinks too much alcohol and pulls it all out, a habit he got from his mother. Balaraju sees one day while transporting the mortal remains of a person named Peter, the wife of the deceased, Mallika (Lavanya), and immediately falls for her.
He introduces her right at the funeral. Although Mallika’s family rejects him, he still tries to convince her and a complaint is lodged against Balaraju. This is when a twist is introduced into the plot – the mother of the hero (played by Aamani) comes in and changes the course of his life. The rest of the story reveals the other side of Balaraju and his love affair with Mallika.
The chemistry on the screen of the main couple, Kartikeya and Lavanya Tripathi, worked out well in the film and Kartikeya tried his best to sport the robust, massive look, and improved a lot in terms of acting. Lavanya also portrayed her well in the role of Mallika, a simple middle-class girl who works as a nurse, who is upset about the death of her husband, Peter.
Even as she tries to overcome the situation, she gets upset by Balaraju trying to enchant her. Slowly she develops feelings for him in the second half, but respect for her in-laws makes her think.
Senior actor Aamani experiments with new characters and gets good response. Here she plays an alcoholic mother who is fed up with family responsibilities but also does not want to give up with family. As a person trapped between family, addiction and her love for a TV mechanic, the experienced actor does a great job.
Murali Sharma and Srikanth Iyengar play important roles and they deliver what is expected of them. Anusuya Bharadwaj has a cameo in a special song that gives emotional drama a bit of spice.
