Hyderabad: Hyderabad is poised to add another iconic landmark to its landscape in the form of the country’s largest Dr Ambedkar statue in a sprawling 10 acre at NTR Gardens. Work on the 125-foot statue is expected to begin on April 14, with Ambedkar Jayanthi.
The Department of Roads and Buildings, on behalf of the SC Corporation, has tendered for the implementation of the project, which is estimated at more than 146 million.
‘This is a huge project and only experienced companies are invited to carry out the project. The bidding process is expected to be completed in a few days and efforts are underway to begin work on Ambedkar Jayanthi, ‘a senior R&B official told Telangana Today.
The designs for different components have already been completed and the statue will be installed on a hill in the gardens. The final designs were introduced in September last year by KT Rama Rao, Minister of Health, E Rajender and others. Koppula Eshwar, Minister of Social Welfare, was given the responsibility to complete the project.
The idea is to develop the place as a tourist spot, with various artifacts related to the life of Dr Ambedkar in the area. A museum is also planned on the site, in addition to laser shows. According to the designs, the statue will be about 45 meters wide and have 9 tons of bronze skin covering. A huge 155 tons of stainless steel will be used to make the statue’s frame. It will take about nine months to one year to complete the project.
In addition to the 125-foot statue at NTR Gardens, the Telangana government has already installed a 29-foot Ambedkar statue at the Center for Dalit Studies in Borabanda.
