GURUGRAM: The second phase of prison radio from four jails in the state, including the city’s Bhondsi Jail, will be on air in a few days. For this, inmates were selected and trained over the past few weeks. Those at Bhondsi Jail completed their training on Thursday.
Apart from Bhondsi, the other jails that have been chosen for the Prison Radio are the District Jail in Rohtak, Central Jail in Hisar and the Karnal district jail. A total of 26 inmates, including five women and one transgender, were selected through an audition and trained on how to speak over the mike and design radio programmes. The training was conceptualised by Vartika Nanda, the prison reformer and head of the journalism department at Lady Shri Ram College.
“The training concluded at Bhondsi District Jail on Thursday. Four prisons selected for phase two will soon start their radio programmes. These inmates will plan the radio programmes themselves and run these on Jail Radio, meant only for the inmates. Its range will only be limited to the prison premises,” said K Selvaraj, director-general, prisons.
Nanda, who has trained the inmates, said the first phase had been successful and the selected candidates had been trained in all aspects of hosting shows on the radio.
