Northern Michigan fugitive sought by state police arrested in Oscoda

Mar. 19—A felon sought by Michigan State Police for failing to turn himself in to begin a prison sentence has been arrested, officials said Friday.

James Dominic Gross, 22, from the Lincoln area in northern Michigan, was captured after police received a tip, they said. The tipster saw an item about Gross in the news and called Northeastern Michigan Crime Stoppers.

Acting on the information, Oscoda Township police found and arrested Gross, who was hiding at a home in Oscoda, officials said.

State police said Gross pleaded guilty in February to third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child.

During a teleconferenced hearing this month, he was sentenced to 66 months in prison and ordered to turn himself in by the end of the day. However, he never showed up and evaded arrest, authorities said. They also said Gross was wanted on new felony charges.

    (Bloomberg) -- Sixth Street Partners contends Dyal Capital Partners’ proposed merger with a rival investment fund would leave Sixth Street mired in an “unwanted marriage” and argues the combination should be temporarily put on hold.Sixth Street, which manages more than $50 billion, wants a Delaware judge to tap the brakes on Dyal’s merger with Owl Rock Capital Partners until she can decide whether a 2017 agreement gives the New York-based investment firm the right to kill the deal.“If consummated, this transaction would force Sixth Street into an unwanted marriage with a direct competitor in clear breach of Sixth Street’s contractual rights,” the fund said in an unsealed court filing. Delaware Chancery Court Judge Morgan Zurn is set to hold a March 24 hearing on the matter.Under the 2017 deal, Dyal bought a 10% stake in Sixth Street. Then, in December, Dyal and Owl Rock announced they’d join forces. It would allow the combined company to go public with $45 billion in assets and a new name, Blue Owl, through a special purpose acquisition company.David Wells, a Dyal spokesman, said Friday the fund remains “confident that we will prevail in this case and also remain on track to close our strategic combination in the first half of this year.”Dyal’s strategy is to take stakes in investment firms, some of which compete for the same business as Owl Rock, which has fast grown into a dominant player in the direct-lending market. Sixth Street alleges the deal changes its relationship with Dyal.The transaction represents an “about-face for defendants, whose investment in Sixth Street was predicated on a promise to be Sixth Street’s trusted partner -- not its competitor,” the fund’s lawyers said in the filing. Golub Capital, a $35 billion credit specialist, also sued last month, asking a New York judge to block the combination. A Dyal unit bought a stake in Golub in 2018 for about $1 billion.While Dyal contends the 2017 investment agreement doesn’t give its erstwhile partner a say over deals, the fund has sought Sixth Street’s consent in other transactions, according to court filings. In May 2020, Dyal officials sent a letter to Sixth Street requesting “consent for a financing transaction pursuant to which the Dyal Funds would issue notes” backed by Sixth Street’s contributions to those funds, according to the filing. Sixth Street consented to the deal, the filing shows.Dyal’s “prior conduct shows their own recognition” of Sixth Street’s rights, Sixth Street’s lawyers argued.The case is Sixth Street Partners Management Co. v. In a Friday statement, the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office reportedly described her as “trusted partner” of the leadership of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which has been blamed for organizing the assassinations.The newspaper El Universal reported that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel had attempted to use the two Israelis to launder the millions but came to believe that the two weren’t going to give them their share, so allegedly arranged the hit job using Ballar Fallas and hired guns.At the time of the murders, the shooters were named as Esperanza Gutierrez, a 33-year-old woman, and 23-year-old male Mauricio Hiram. They are both believed to have belonged to the Tláhuac Cartel, which is reportedly allied to the larger Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Gutierrez was arrested moments after the July 2019 hit, whereas Hiram wasn’t tracked down and arrested until September of that year.Israel’s embassy in Mexico said the two dead men had previous criminal records in both Israel and Mexico, and Mexican police have noted that the evidence suggested that the shooting was linked to a financial dispute between criminal groups with connections to the Israeli mafia.“The event yesterday leads us to relate the facts with a settling of scores among criminal groups and/or organized crime,” Ulíses Lara López, a spokesman for the city prosecutor’s office, said in 2019. “It could be a settling of scores in the Israeli mafia, which is why a complete identification [of the victims] was possible, along with their criminal records.”In August 2019, Mexico asked Interpol for help in finding Ballar Fallas.
