Update: March 19, 2021

According to WindowsCentral's sources, Microsoft might not bring the Windows 10X out before the second half of 2021. Previously, the launch was tipped for H1 2021 but the tech publication claims the launch has been delayed, primarily because Microsoft wants its new OS more polished. According to the report, Microsoft wants to ensure the product is ready and robust for a smooth release.

When Windows 10X officially introduced back in October 2019, it was expected to "unlock a new era of mobile creativity." Well, it will definitely do it one day as Microsoft brings more dual-screen devices commercially. But, before that Microsoft has taken a u-turn where it will make use of Windows 10X for single-screen devices as well. Though, it doesn’t look like the company is completely shifting its focus on devices with single-screen.

Microsoft will continue to work in both areas. It’s just that, it has also decided to refocus on what was not initially planned.

Later in the same month of the introduction, a leak came that suggested the Windows 10X will come to laptops as well. The leak consisted of an internal Microsoft document that talked about a new app launcher but we saw nothing substantial later that could trail the speculation further.

Now, Microsoft itself has made it official via a blog post that Windows 10X is coming to laptops as well. Microsoft has announced that these single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that it delivers to its customers. As per Microsoft, the Windows 10X flexibility has enabled it to "pivot its focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices" that would make use of the cloud to help the customers.

Microsoft also made it clear that it will continue to look for the right moment to bring dual-screen devices to the market. This suggests that Windows 10X may come to single-screen devices first.

However, it is unknown when single-screen devices like laptops will start supporting the Windows 10X. Reportedly, the decision comes after seeing the increase in usage of personal computers during the coronavirus pandemic. Microsoft has seen a 75 percent year-over-year increase in the time spent in Windows 10.
