Man arrested with gun near vice president's official residence

A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon near the Naval Observatory, Vice President Kamala Harris' official residence, for gun offenses. Police said a rifle and ammunition were found in his vehicle, located about a block away. 

Harris and her husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, do not currently reside at the Naval Observatory, which is undergoing renovations. 

According to a police bulletin from Texas, Paul Michael Murray, 31, had been experiencing paranoid delusions of the government and military being after him. Police said he recently purchased an AR-15 and may have had it with him in D.C. Police said Murray's mother received a text from him on Wednesday morning saying he was in Washington and would be taking care of his problem.

Murray, from San Antonio, was detained by Secret Service and then arrested by Metropolitan Police. He was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying a rifle or shotgun outside of a business, possession of unregistered ammunition and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device. 

It's not clear if Murray was intending to harm or come in contact with Harris or members of her family.

Out of the $143 billion in chips sold in China in 2020, only chips worth $22.7 billion were produced in China. Chinese-headquartered companies produced chips worth just $8.3 billion. The TikTok parent had posted at least a dozen semiconductor job openings, including hardware and software engineers in cities like Shanghai and Beijing. The company was exploring initiatives, including building server chips based on Arm Ltd designs. ByteDance has reportedly formed a team to explore the development of AI chips. The success of TikTok and its domestic clone, Douyin, made ByteDance the most valuable global start-up. The company was last valued at about $180 billion. It is contemplating an IPO for some of its businesses in Hong Kong, including Douyin. Why It Matters: ByteDance rival Baidu Inc (NASDAQ: BIDU) recently raised $230 million for its AI chip division ahead of a potential spin-off of the business. Baidu’s AI chip unit Kunlun’s recent fundraising valued the business at $2 billion. Baidu intends to make it a standalone company to monetize its chip design abilities. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE: BABA) launched an AI chip for its cloud computing products in late 2019. China’s AI unicorn SenseTime started developing homegrown AI chips after being added to a U.S. trade list in 2019. Google, Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) remain focused on silicon’s customized design as they forayed into newer fields. Gains in efficiency and security featured amongst the key advantages of crafting application-specific hardware. ByteDance’s venture could produce customized chips for data processing and make AI recommendations for its social apps. He was pretty much fed up, and kind of at [the] end of his rope, and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did,” Baker said. The backlash against Baker compounded on Wednesday evening, when several news outlets reported that he had previously shared images on Facebook of T-shirts that contained a racist slogan about China and the coronavirus. BuzzFeed News reported that in 2020, Baker shared an image of T-shirt with a logo that parodied Corona beer and read “Covid 19: imported virus from Chy-na”. BuzzFeed reported that the post was reportedly hidden after the outlet inquired about it. The Daily Beast reported that the posts on Baker’s Facebook account were first noticed by a Twitter user, and that the T-shirts appeared to have been made by a company that was owned by a former deputy sheriff for Cherokee county. Police say Long claimed to have a “sex addiction,” and authorities have said that he apparently lashed out at what he saw as sources of “temptation”. Many on Twitter pointed out that the sexualization of Asian women and racism are impossible to disentangle. The state representative Bee Nguyen, the first Vietnamese American to serve in the Georgia house of representatives and a frequent advocate for women and communities of color, said that the shooting appeared to be at the “intersection of gender-based violence, misogyny and xenophobia”. Asian American communities across the country have been on heightened alert since the attack, which comes amid a surge in anti-Asian violence during the past year. Donald Trump repeatedly demonized China over the coronavirus outbreak. Long faces eight counts of murder and one count of assault. The Cherokee county sheriff’s office has so far revealed the identities of the four victims killed, including 33-year-old Delaina Ashley Yaun, 54-year-old Paul Andre Michels, 49-year-old Xiaojie Yan, and 44-year-old Daoyou Feng.

What Happened: Ford first introduced the F-150 line for police in 2017, and the new model includes an improved 120 mph top speed and automatic four-wheel-drive mode with torque-on-demand transfer case to enable a smooth transition to off-road capability. The vehicle rides on specially developed Goodyear (NASDAQ: GT) tires designed to handle rapid acceleration, high speeds and aggressive cornering. A new police engine idle feature an officer remove the key from the ignition and securely exit the truck with the engine running. The vehicle is also equipped with Ford's SYNC 4 cloud connectivity, which includes an 8-inch touchscreen in the center stack and an embedded modem with wireless updates. The new model also offers a standard towing capacity of 7,000 pounds and available towing capacity of 11,200 pounds, in addition to a payload capacity of 2,030 pounds. "Law enforcement agencies told us they would love to add F-150 Police Responder towing, hauling and off-road performance to their fleets, but they need more confidence in speed and handling," Greg Ebel, Ford's police vehicle brand manager, said in a statement. "Whether suburban police departments, border patrol agents or rural sheriffs, officers never know where the job might take them, but the all-new F-150 Police Responder provides a pickup truck option engineered to get them there faster and with greater agility than ever before." Catching Crooks With EVs? Ford is the dominant automobile supplier for U.S. police agencies, supplying more than half of the vehicles used in law enforcement. Electric vehicles are not common in police fleets, but a few departments have included Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) EVs in their operations. Indiana's Bargersville Police Department purchased a Model 3 in August 2019, with Connecticut's Westport Police Department getting its own Model 3 in December 2019. California's Fremont Police Department purchased a Model Y in July 2020 and New York's Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department incorporated a Model Y into its patrol fleet last December. The latest department to get a Model Y is California's Seaside Police Department, which received municipal approval for two Tesla EVs. The concept of an EV police car also carries an unfortunate bit of bad publicity: When the Fremont department was testing the viability of the Tesla in September 2019, an officer involved in a high-speed pursuit radioed for assistance because his battery was in danger of running out of power. The department later said the Tesla technology was not faulty and acknowledged the vehicle was not fully charged when the officer began his shift four hours earlier.
