India skipper Virat Kohli sets really high-standards on the field himself, and had openly expressed displeasure about the body-language of the players, post the third T20I between India and England. But in all fairness, he also made an error on the field when he dropped Jos Buttler, when the latter was batting on 76.
Buttler had reverse-swept Yuzvendra Chahal, and the ball came to Kohli at backward point, at a comfortable height. But he somehow managed to drop the catch. Had he caught the ball, that would have saved him from registering an unwanted record. The drop in the match against England was his sixth blip in T20Is since 2019, the most by any player from Test nations. He surpassed Chris Jordan of England.
The list has a few more surprises, with the likes of Steve Smith on No.3 with four drops, and so has Chahal.
Meanwhile, In the last few years, the fitness of the Indian players has improved drastically, and the credit for that largely goes to skipper Virat Kohli, who is certainly one of the fittest players in the world. Recently, when Rahul Tewatia and Varun Chakravarthy failed their fitness tests, Kohli had pointed out that there going to be no compromise on that aspect of game.
But how did Kohli’s obsession with fitness start? Former India opener Virender Sehwag might just have the answer to the million dollar question. The latter narrated an incident from 2011, when Team India had toured England for a four-Test series. “I last toured England in 2011/12 to play two Test matches. I played one match at The Oval and one in Birmingham. All the county teams that are there, have a chart in their dressing rooms that demonstrate the standards of fitness. I think the fitness standards of this current Indian team have been picked from there,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz
He went on to say that some of the players tried it themselves, but failed miserably. But Kohli, perhaps did not accept it. “I’m saying it because back then even we were impressed with it. This much should be the weight, the mobility, the flexibility, and so on. When we tried doing it, more than half of our team failed in those tests in 2011/12,” Sehwag said.”So I think that is what Virat Kohli has picked. If England had that standard in fitness, we should too. And ever since he’s taken over as captain, he’s stressed enough on fitness that certain tests should be cleared and only then can we compete the best.”
