G Jagadeesha said that testing for
Covid-19 in the MIT,
Manipal campus is being ramped up after a rise in the number of cases. As on March 18, MIT reported a total of 106 cases. While 26 fresh cases were reported on Wednesday, the institute added 11 more cases on Thursday.
The campus has already been declared as a
containment zone. The DC in a video message stated that in the district, the maximum number of cases are being reported from the MIT campus. A meeting has already been held with the MIT officials and health department officials. Further, health department officials have been instructed to test about 5,000 students who are present on the campus. All shops and malls in the area have been asked to take necessary precautions and prevent the spread of the infection.
Registrar of MAHE, Dr Narayana Sabhahit told TOI the cases have increased during the last two days and the majority of the students who have tested positive are asymptomatic. The management is taking all steps to ensure that every student is being taken care of and the teacher- guardian is in touch with the parents. All Covid-19 protocols prescribed by the government have been strictly implemented and students have been asked to strictly confine themselves to the hostels. Medical infrastructure including ambulances are stationed on the premises, to meet any kind of emergency. All measures have been taken to curb the spread of Covid-19 including restriction of movement into the academic block, he said.
Udupi district reported a total of 38 Covid-19 positive cases on Thursday.
