Istanbul: Boxer Nikhat Zareen has packed reigning world champion Paltceva Ekaterina to enter the women’s 51kg quarterfinals at the Bosphorus Boxing Tournament in Istanbul.
Asian Championship bronze medalist Zareen caused a great stir on the second day of the tournament when she outscored the Russian boxer 5-0.
The Indian pugilist will now have another difficult task in hand as she tackles two-time world champion Kazakhstan boxer Kyzaibay Nazym in the final 8 match on the third day.
Apart from Zareen, 2013 Asian champions Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather and Parveen also recorded victories in their respective categories to advance to the quarterfinals.
While Thapa got better from Smagulov Baghtiyov, Kazakhstan, 3-2 in the 63kg powerlift for men, world champion silver medalist Lather (57kg) and Parveen (60kg) beat local favorites
Surmeneli Tugcenaz and Ozyol Esra won 5-0 in their respective women’s matches in the second round for women.
Meanwhile, Duryodhah Negi (69 kg), Brijesh Yadav (81 kg) and Krishan Sharma (+ 91 kg) made exits with the losses in the preliminary round.
On the third day of the event, six Indian boxers will fight in their respective quarterfinals. Foam, Zareen, Parveen and Jyoti (69 kg) will be seen in action in the women’s category, while Thapa and Solanki will present the Indian challenge in the men’s category.
Earlier, Indian boxers Gaurav Solanki and Sonia Lather put on brilliant performances on the opening day of the Bosphorus Boxing Tournament in Istanbul as they advanced to the next round in their respective categories.
