Greater Noida: A 52-year-old labourer died after falling into a pit at Chinese mobile manufacturer Oppo’s factory in Ecotech I on Wednesday, police said.
The accident happened around 8am. The worker who died, Yakub, was a resident of Bhatta village in Greater Noida. Ravi, a co-worker, took Yakub to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS).
A statement from police said Yakub was declared dead by doctors there.
Yakub had suffered internal injuries and an injury on his foot. Later in the day, locals led a protest outside the factory. Local members of Congress, too, joined the protesters. Manoj Chaudhary, district president of the GB Nagar unit of Congress, told TOI the protesters were removed from the spot by the company’s guards and police.
“Scores of our workers joined the protest and spoke to the company management. A resolution was brokered and the company promised to give Rs 3.5 lakh as compensation and a job to the one of the daughters of the deceased. The deceased had been working at the site for the past three-four months and is survived by five children aged between eight and 23 and his wife,” Chaudhary said.
Additional DCP (Greater Noida) Vishal Pandey said, “No post-mortem was conducted as the issue was resolved between the company and the family.” A spokesperson for Oppo did not respond to queries.
