Held for circulating ex-girlfriend’s photos online, man kills self in jail

Greater Noida: A 24-year-old youth who was arrested for allegedly making his former girlfriend’s photographs viral on social media after her family fixed her marriage with another youth, committed suicide by hanging himself in Luksar jail on Tuesday afternoon.
Suraj Mehto, originally from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, worked at a private company in Noida’s Bhangel area. He was arrested on Monday for allegedly making his photographs with his former girlfriend viral on Facebook and Instagram. The woman’s family had disapproved of their relationship since their castes didn’t match, and fixed her marriage with another youth.
While an FIR was lodged in the case last month, the youth was arrested on Monday and lodged in the temporary jail arranged for the new inmates due to Covid-19 concerns. On Tuesday, after lunch, he was made to speak to his parents like other inmates when he was allegedly scolded by his father Walinder Mehto.
Luksar jailor AK Singh told TOI that Suraj was possibly upset due to the scolding and soon after the conversation, he hanged himself with the bolt of a toilet using his shoelace inside the jail compound. “He was removed from the noose and taken to the district hospital in Sector 30, where he was declared brought dead,” Singh said.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem. Sector 39 police said that the deceased was booked under IPC sections 354 (a) (sexual harassment), 354 (d) (stalking) and 67 of the IT Act.
