Health dept, Mapusa municipality to act against discharge of wastewater in Tar river

The Bardez deputy collector I Kapil Phadte on Wednesday has directed the health and Mapusa municipality officials to hold a joint inspection and take action against the violators who are discharging untreated wastewater into the nullahs which further travels and pollutes the Mapusa Tar river.

Taking cognizance of the recent dead fish floating incident in the Tar River, deputy collector Bardez I Kapil Phadte had convened a joint meeting to take necessary corrective measures to stop pollution of the Tar River at Mapusa.  The meeting was attended by Goa state pollution control board officers Rohan Nagvekar and Nilesh Parsekar, water resources assistant engineer  Ganpat Raikar, junior engineer Paresh Saulekar, MMC officials Nadeem Shaikh and Sangita Satardekar, junior engineer,  Dr Cheryl De Souza health officer of Mapusa Urban health centre along with sanitary officer Uday Tamhankar and others.

During the meeting the issue of discharge of untreated water into the nullah which further flows into the river Tar was discussed.  Goa pollution control board officer informed that samples which were collected from Tar river at Ganesh immersion site are tested as polluted and said that necessary measures need to be taken.

Salman Khan and Kishor Rao who were present for the meeting raised concern over the stagnation of river water between Guirim to Mapusa as a result vegetation has grown. He also raised concern over the piling work done for the new highway bridge at Gaunswaddo and suggested that material used for piling could also lead to pollution as the material is not good for marine life.

Following a discussion the deputy collector Kapil Phadte directed both the health and municipality officials to start issuing notices to violators for discharging untreated wastewater and also directed the talathi to conduct surveys along the stretch and identify violators.
